Resumen de Changement d'attitude et fausse attribution: effet de la centration sur le comportement de soumission

Marie-Madeleine Martinie, Robert-Vincent Joule

  • In the forced compliance paradigm, subjects reduce their dissonance by changing their attitude. When subjects realise the problematic behavior in the presence of a source of misattribution, no attitude change is observed ( misattribution effect) . Our two experiments show that a change in attitude is observed if the subjects' attention is focused on their counterattitudinal behavior. In the first experiment, subjects were requested (choice condition) to write a counterattitudinal essay in the presence of a source of misattribution (ultrasound) or in the absence of a source of misattribution (no ultrasound) . Half of the subjects were asked to read and number their counterattitudinal arguments (focus), the other half were not asked (no focus). As expected, the subjects in the ultrasound/focus situation rationalized the counterattitudinal act contrary to the subjects in the ultrasound/no focus situation. The second experiment shows that the counting of arguments is a determinant factor in attitude change.
