¿Responsorios o villancicos?: estructura, función y su presencia en los Maitines de Navidad de la Nueva España durante los siglos XVI y XVII

    Este texto hace un recuento de la relación entre dos formas musicales y literarias presentes en la liturgia católica de Nueva España durante los siglos XVI y XVII: el villancico y el responsorio, con un estudio específico de su presencia y usos en el oficio de Maitines de Navidad. Se establece la diferencia entre dos tradiciones de villancicos, una secular, relacionada con la música cortesana, y la otra religiosa; cada una de ellas tuvo un desarrollo musical distinto. Se expone cómo los villancico s fueron ganando un sitio en la liturgia, hasta el grado de formar parte del oficio de maitines; allí ocupaban el lugar correspondiente a los responsorios, de diversas maneras; una de las que se han documentado mejor era que se cantaban al mismo tiempo que los textos litúrgico s de los responsorios, mientras éstos se rezaban en voz baja. Se describen las características que debía tener el oficio de maitines, y de manera detallada la forma específica de tal oficio en la fiesta de Navidad; se comparan las formas de los responsorios de este oficio con las de algunos villancicos para la misma fiesta, mostrando sus elementos comunes. Por último, se documenta la importancia creciente del uso de los villancico s en la liturgia novohispana durante el periodo señalado, a partir de fuentes de la época, sobre todo de la ciudad de Puebla.

    This article explains the relationship between two musical and literary forms present in the Roman Catholic liturgy of New Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries: the villancico and the responsory. It does so by means of a specific study of their presence and usage in the Christmas Matins. A difference between two forms of villancico is established: one is secular, related to court music, and the other, religious, and each one had a different musical development. The article also describes how the villancicos acquired a dominant presence in the liturgy, so much so that they ended forming part of the Matins services. They occupied the space corresponding to the responsories, and this in several ways, the best documented of which is the singing of villancicos at the same time that the liturgical texts of the responsories were recited (in a low voice). The article comments as well on the characteristics of the Matins service, and specifically the one pertaining to the Christmas celebration; a comparison is established between the forms of the responsories and the villancicos destined to this celebration, showing that both had common features. Finally, based on archival sources of that time, especially from the city of Puebla, it gives proof of the increasing importance of the use of villancico s in the liturgy of New Spain during that period.
