Resumen de El concurso de música popular mexicana de "El Universal"

En julio de 1917 el diario capitalino El Universal lanzó una convocatoria para premiar la originalidad de la canción popular mexicana. Como artífices de esta propuesta, Rubén M. Campos y Manuel M. Ponce establecieron los lineamientos estéticos de la evaluación y, junto con el pianista y compositor Gustavo E. Campa, conformaron el jurado calificador.
Bajo las implicaciones de un creciente nacionalismo posrevolucionario, el presente artículo refleja, con fuentes he mero gráficas de primera mano, las tendencias populistas planteadas por la empresa editorial y muestra una lectura historio gráfica paralela que evidencia la postura crítica de los artistas involucrados en el proyecto. Además, se revela a lo largo del trabajo el impacto social, económico y cultural de la publicación periódica patrocinadora.

In july 1917 the Mexico City newspaper El Universal launched a proposal to reward the originality of the Mexican popular song. As creators of this proposal, Rubén M. Campos and Manuel M. Ponce established the aesthetic characteristics of the evaluation and, together with the pianist and composer Gustavo Campa, formed part of the jury.
Under the implications of a growing post-revolutionary nationalism, the following article, using firsthand journalistic sources, reflects the populist tendencies posed by the publishers of the newspaper and offers a parallel historiographical reading that shows the skeptical point of view of the artists involved in the project. Also, throughout the text one can see the social, economical and cultural impact of the newspaper that sponsored the proposal.
