Resumen de El nuevo riesgo de tsunami: considerando el peor escenario

  El gran tsunami del Océano Índico de 2004, dramáticamente marco un antes y un después en la percepción que se tenía del riesgo de tsunami. Este desastre de comienzos del siglo XXI, nos enseño el elevado costo que significa desconocer y subestimar el pasado de territorios que han sido afectados por tsunamis de gran magnitud. Aunque poco frecuentes, ellos representan los peores escenarios conocidos y ahora deben ser considerados con mayor atención, lo que implica proponer nuevas formas de manejar el riesgo. En este trabajo, se destacan las lecciones aprendidas después del tsunami del Sudeste Asiático y se discute sobre que escenario utilizar para determinar el riesgo de tsunami, ejemplificando, con el gran tsunami chileno de 1960 y su impacto en el centro-sur de Chile.

  The great Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 dramatically changed the perception that people had about tsunami risks. This disaster at the beginning of the XXI century, taught us the high cost of ignoring and underestimating the past of territories that have been affected by tsunamis of great magnitude. Although these events are not very frequent, they represent the worst known scenarios and they should now be considered with more attention, implying the need of proposing new forms of managing the risk. In this work, are emphasized the lessons learned after the tsunami in Southeast Asia and it is discussed about which scenarios should be used to better determine tsunami risks, taking the example of the big 1960 Chile tsunami and its impact in the central-south Chile.
