This paper explores the significance of fieldwork for identity formation in three phases of modern Chinese geologic education: the prerevolutionary overseas phase (190312), the Geological School period (191618), and the early years of the Peking University Department of Geology (191828). This examination demonstrates the importance of the body in connecting the physicality of the individual to the dignity of the national collective and argues that Chinese identity was defined by the willingness to remake oneself for the sake of the nation, rather than by any intrinsic qualities of Chineseness.
