    En el presente artículo se analiza un texto en lengua tarasca de 1543 que incluye la lectura de un documento pictográfico que se guardaba en la ciudad de Tzintzuntzan. El breve texto trata de la conquista y repoblamiento de esta capital tarasca en la época prehispánica y resalta la participación de unos mercaderes que probablemente eran de habla náhuatl. A partir de 1538, cuando el barrio de Pátzcuaro fue elevado al estatus de ciudad principal, los nahuas protagonizaron la defensa de los antiguos derechos de Tzintzuntzan. En este contexto parecen haberse elaborado y empleado el referido documento pictográfico y su resumen en tarasco.

    This article analyzes a text written in the Tarascan language in 1543, which includes the interpretation of a pictographic document kept in the city of Tzintzuntzan. The short text deals with the conquest and repopulation of this Tarascan capital in the pre-Hispanic era and highlights the participation of merchants who were probably Náhuatl speakers. As from 1538, when the district of Pátzcuaro was raised to the status of principal city, the Nahua took part in the defense of the ancient rights fo Tzintzuntzan. This is the context in which the pictographic document and its Tarascan summary appear to have been drafted.
