"Se fior la penna abborra": Inferno XXV e le invenzioni del mutare e trasmutare

    In the bolgia, Dante narrates extraordinary and terrible transformations with a greater ability than that shown by Classical authors such as Ovid and Lucan, but the various episodes of mutazione (mutation) and transmutazione (transmutation) that he describes produce a number of unique metaphors � smoke, fog, ash, watery foam and others � which replace the impossibility of directly describing the actual metamorphoses. Indeed, in verses 74-75 of this Canto XVII, the poet portrays the main features of the bolgia he just visited, saying that he heard sounds that he couldn�t differentiate and understand and saw blurred images that he couldn�t describe. This is why he invents metaphors representing key themes which Camerino has investigated in a thorough analysis, where, for the first time, he examines semantic and stylistic correlations through which Dante successfully manages to depict a precarious and elusive human condition, lacking any true identity.

    En esta bolgia, Dante narra extraordinarias y terribles transformaciones con mayor habilidad que las mostradas por autores clásicos como Ovidio o Lucano, pero los varios episodios de mutación y transmutación que describe producen un número de metáforas únicas �humo, niebla, cenizas, espuma y otras� que reemplaza la imposibilidad de describir directamente las metamorfosis. Así, en los versos 74-75 de este canto XVII, el poeta retrata los rasgos principales de la bolgia que acaba de visitar, por medio de sonidos que no puede distinguir y entender y de confusas imágenes que no puede describir. Por ello inventa metáforas, que se analizan en este artículo en el que, por primera vez, se examinan las correlaciones semánticas y estilísticas a través de las cuales Dante consigue pintar la precariedad y elusividad de la condición humana, falta de una auténtica identidad.
