Polarization and divergence among spanish provinces: a counterfactual density estimation approach

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of the per-capita GDP for the Spanish provinces over the 1961-1997 period by using a nonparametric density estimation approach. We will demonstrate that after a period of convergence during the sixties and part of the seventies, during the eighties there is evidence in favour of intra-groups convergence (or polarisation of income), and in the last period analysed (1991-1997) an emergence process of divergence and increasing polarisation among groups can be found. Moreover, we will analyse the effects of relevant factors such as private, human and public capital stock on the distribution of the per-capita income in 1995 by estimating counterfactual densities. Evidence in favour of a positive role of the public sector is found.
