  • Resumen
    • This paper reviews the history of Military Pharmacy at the time of the events that led the Spaniards to turn against the French invaders in 1808.

The arrival of the Bourbon dynasty to Spain caused important changes for the Military Pharmacy.

During the reign of Charles IV, the dedication and effective results of the pharmacists in the War of Roussillon, granted MILITARY RIGHTS AND THE USE OF THE UNIFORM to the pharmacists serving in the military hospitals. Later, this privilege was extended to the rest of the pharmacists serving in field hospitals.

Charles IV established the foundations of the future Military Pharmacy, integrating the Royal Druggist in the military ranks, nominating his First Druggist as Chief of the Military Pharmacy.

This was the situation when Napoleon wanted to take advantage of problems in the Spanish monarchy, between Charles IV and his son, the future Fernando VII. Napoleon got the two monarchs to yield their Royal rights to him and forced his brother Joseph, king of Naples, to accept the Spanish Crown. But Napoleon was wrong.

He assumed that the weakness of the Monarchy was also of the Spanish people, but they were not willing to accept the French presence on their territory.

On May 2, 1808, the people rose up in arms against the French troops in Madrid, and the Independence War began.

This paper examines how the Spanish Military Pharmacy was organized during the years-long struggle.

As it arises from the data presented, our military pharmacists wrote one of the most brilliant pages in the History of Spanish Military Pharmacy.
