  • Resumen
    • This article is based on the texts about the concept of "liberal/liberalism" within the project "Iberconceptos". It presents a comparative reflection on the birth and the early development of this concept in nine countries of the Iberian Atlantic world between 1750 and 1850. After so me methodological preliminaries, explaining our own way of dealing with a comparative conceptual history of liberalism, so me lexico-semantical data conceming the rise of modem meanings of the word "liberal" and the coinage of "liberalism" are presented. The process of gradual diffusion, "densification", and "temporalization" of the concept is also sketched. Lastly, the sources allow us to show how the "historicization" of Ibero-American liberalisms and its conversion into a kind of key-concept of modernity lead to the rise of different political parties calling themselves "progressives" and "conservatives". These nouns evidence that the modern philosophies of history were assumed -by political agents in order to understand themselves and their political actions.
