Resumen de "Ciudadano" y "vecino" en Iberoamérica, 1750-1850: monarquía o república

Cristóbal Aljovín de Losada

  • This article is based on the texts about the dyad ciudadano/vecino within the project "Iberconceptos". It compares the conceptual histories of these terms in nine countries of the Iberian Atlantic world between 1750 and 1850. These years mark the transition from the Ancient Regime to modernity. This allows us to observe the ruptures and continuities of both terms, the values they acquire in particular processes, and how they lose these same values in other circumstances. For example, the concept of "citizenship" has changed from being almost an equivalent to "neighbor" to become the "citizen of the nation". During the Ancient Regime, the meaning of ciudadano/vecino was very similar in Iberian Atlantic countries. Later, we notice many more different meanings for the dyad. Through different types of sources - journalistic information, official sources, literary discourses, etc. - we try to show the course taken by both concepts in the Iberian Atlantic world.
