The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate changes produced in dental arches by extraction and non extraction orthodontic therapy. Three transverse and two anteroposterior measurements were made on initial and final dental casts of 44 maxillary and 44 mandibular arches treated; 22 extraction, 22 non extraction. Results showed that both maxillary and mandibular intermolar widths increase in non extraction treatments (p < 0.000) and mandibular interpremolar width increases in extraction treatments (p < 0.02). Anteroposterior measurements were notably reduced in extraction cases. These results may suggest that maxillary interpremolar width and maxillary and mandibular intercanine widths remain stable whatever the treatment, but they cannot conclude that extraction therapy produces narrower dental arches when compared with non extraction therapy.
