    Presento la noción de historicismo americano como útil para el estudio de la cultura escrita en las cuatro principales tradiciones escritas americanas: la hispanoamericana, la brasilera, la haitiana y la norteamericana. Llamo la atención hacia la riqueza escrita sobre las repúblicas americanas. La historia fue el género preponderante en las bibliotecas republicanas y el logro máximo de representación escrita en las primeras décadas de existencia independiente. Argumento a favor de la colección de estas obras y de su consideración en la historia de la cultura escrita americana. Esta colección de historias republicanas aún no ha sido estudiada enlo que tiene de común: la necesidad compartida en todo el continente de narrar, describir, comentar y legitimar las nuevas repúblicas americanas. Únicamente el estudio crítico de las bibliotecas republicanas hará posible que nos apropiemos de las ricas tradiciones escritas americanas. Y sólo entonces habremos llegado a ese estado de una cultura escrita en que ella tiene la seguridad suficiente para citarse a sí misma.

    I introduce the notion of American historicism as a tool to study written culture in the four principal American traditions of letters: Hispanic American, Brazilian, Haitian, and North American. I call attention to the rich collection of writing on the American republics. History was the predominant genre in republican libraries and the apogee of written representation in the first century following independence. I discuss the need to carry out research-oriented collections of American histories and argue lor their critical study today. These republican histories still have not been studied in terms of their communalities: the shared need throughout the continent to narrate, describe, comment, and legitimate the new American republics. Only by critically studying republican libraries we will be able to appropriate the rich traditions of American writing. And only then we will ave achieved a state of culture that has enough confidence to cite itself.
