El artículo profundiza en los motivos del inusitado -y desconocido- interés prestado por Thomas Pitt al arte medieval español durante su viaje en 1760. Sus observaciones al respecto revelan una gran influencia de los círculos más avanzados del medievalismo británico, y que su interés por el arte medieval estaba primordialmente motivado por el deseo de determinar si el gótico podría haber tenido un origen hispano-árabe. El artículo también examina la divulgación de sus observaciones, así como el impacto que éstas tuvieron tanto para el estudio del gótico en general, como del arte medieval español en particular.

The article inquires into the reasons behind the unusual -and unknown- interest in Spanish medieval art paid by Thomas Pitt during his trip of 1760. His observations in this regard reveal a great influence by the most avant-garde circles of British medievalism, as well as that his interest had been fuelled in great part by his intention to determine whether the Gothic could have had an hispano-arabic origin. The circulation of his observations, as well as the impact that they had, both for the study of Gothic in general, and for the study of Spanish medieval art in particular, are also examined.
