    Las investigaciones históricas sobre los procesos de transición a la democracia iniciados en 1974 han puesto en evidencia las limitaciones de los trabajos de los científicos sociales. Es la hora de los historiadores, capaces de realizar comparaciones sin sacrificar las singularidades.

    Se debe analizar lo 'viejo' (el régimen político a sustituir), mostrando la convivencia en el tiempo de instituciones y actitudes autoritarias con otras democráticas, describiendo la forma en la que se procedió a desmontar el Estado con Derecho para poder así construir el Estado de Derecho, señalando el papel jugado por la sociedad civil y su influencia en la toma de decisiones. Es importante también estudiar cómo se hace frente a la autonomía de las Fuerzas Armadas y se afrontan las responsabilidades por las violaciones de los derechos humanos en el régimen autoritario. En suma, se trata de investigar cómo se despejan en cada caso las incertidumbres que condicionan los procesos de transición a la democracia.

    Historical research on processes of transition to democracy since 1974 has shown the limitations of studies carried out by social scientists. It is time to vindicate the role of historians, who are able to establish comparisons without sacrificing singularities.

    In order to study the coexistence of authoritarian and democratic institutions and behaviour it is essential to examine the 'old' �the political regime to be replaced; for describing how the 'State with Law' was deconstructed so as to establish the 'Rule of Law'; and finally for the appreciate the role played by civil society played and its influence in the decision-making process. It is also crucial to investigate how to deal with the autonomy of the armed forces and the eventual liability for the violation of human rights by the authoritarian regimes. In short, the idea is to clear each case of the uncertainties that determine the process of transition to democracy.
