    Este artículo analiza cuatro comunidades guatemaltecas: en Costa Rica, Estados Unidos, México y Belice. Estos países fueron receptores de refugiados durante la guerra civil guatemalteca, y continúan siendo receptores de inmigrantes. Después de describir las políticas de refugiados que propició cada país receptor, y de perfilar cada comunidad guatemalteca, se intenta discernir cuáles de sus características son causa del perfil de cada flujo migratorio y cuáles de las políticas que los recibieron. Se concluye que en Costa Rica y Estados Unidos, las diferencias entre los guatemaltecos que migraron durante la guerra y los de posguerra se derivan de las diferencias de nivel educativo de los flujos. En México y Belice, sin embargo, los inmigrantes de posguerra se encuentran en desventaja por no contar con las políticas e instituciones que apoyaron a quienes llegaron durante la guerra.

    This article analyzes four Guatemalan communities in Costa Rica, United States, Mexico and Belize. These countries received refugees during the Guatemalan civil war, and continue receiving immigrants.

    After describing the refugee policies favored in each country and profiling each Guatemalan community, an effort is made to distinguish which of the characteristics are caused by the profile of the migration flow to each country and which are caused by the policies that received them.

    In Costa Rica and the United States, the differences among the Guatemalans who migrated during the war and post-war are derived from differences in the educational levels of the migration flows. In Mexico and Belize, however, post-war immigrants are at a disadvantage by not having the policies and institutions that supported refugees during the war.
