    La característica més destacada i peculiar del parlar col.loquial de Mallorca és la coexistència de dos articles determinants, l�elecció d�un o de l�altre obeeix a una norma d�ús força estricta. No constitueixen una oposició de sistema, però actuen d�una manera diferent com a instruments verbals de la determinació en els graus d�actualització i de selecció definida. Com a regla general s�empra el derivat de ipsu, però hi ha substantius que reclamen la companyia de l�altre, el derivat de illu, comú a tota la llengua catalana. També trobam illu en frases fetes i locucions. L�objectiu del present estudi és de proporcionar informació sobre els usos de illu i explicar-ne el funcionament d�un i l�altre article partint de la determinació tal com l�exposa E. Coseriu. Per a actuar com a individuador, illu necessita la cooperació del context natural, l�històric o el cultural.

    The most important and peculiar aspect of the colloquial idiom of Majorca is the coexistence of two definite articles. However, the use of one or the other is strictly rule-bound. They are not systemically opposed, but they act differently as verbal instruments in determining degrees of updating and definiteness. As a general rule, the derivative of IPSU is used, but certain nouns require the other form, i.e. the reflex of ILLU, which is common to the whole of the Catalan-speaking area. We also find this latter form in set phrases and expressions. The purpose of the present study is to provide information on the uses of ILLU and explain the function of each of these articles by starting from the concept of definiteness as expounded by Coseriu. In order to perform an individualizing function, ILLU relies on the natural, historical and cultural context.
