Resumen de Die Sammlung Wido Ludwig im Vorderasiatischen museum

Lutz Martin

  • The Museum of the Ancient Near East possesses besides its archaeological and writing collections from the ancient Near East also parts of the deductions of its professional colleagues or former co-operators. Thus came in November 2001 water colours, feather/spring designs, portrays and diary recordings from the deduction of Wido Ludwig to the museum. The 1993 deceased professor for building history at the comprehensive university Siegen participated between 1954 and 1992 as an architect in different excavations of the German Archaeological institute and the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft. Ludwig stood in the tradition of German building researchers, for whom accurate drawing was a basic condition for a detailed findings report. Structures can only be drawn after one completely understands them. The distinction between different building phases or building periods and the recognizing of joining walls are usually only possible through drawings. But not only did the pure excavation work profit from the artistic talents of the excavators. They often recorder the impressions of their journeys, the daily life at the excavation place, and the life of the natives in their pictures as well. On his journeys and in the few free hours throughout the excavation Ludwig too was reaching for pin and brush, again and again in order to capture landscapes and antique ruins in drawings.

In the context of this contribution a part of the pictures of his stays in the Near East ought to be presented with short explanations to the motives.
