    Mi propósito en esta contribución es poner sobre la mesa los asuntos polémicos que desde hace tiempo se vienen planteando sobre las hablas de Extremadura, problemas muchos de ellos sin una solución clara o con soluciones dispares. En las siguientes páginas pasaré revista a cuestiones generales de la dialectología extremeña (el lugar que ocupan las hablas de la región dentro del diasistema español, las fronteras lingüísticas y el léxico dialectal), a cuestiones particulares de tipo fonético (las sibilantes sonoras, la aspiración de Flatina, la abertura de vocales finales en la formación del plural, etc.) o restringidas en la geografía (el origen del seseo de Fuente del Maestre y la filiación histórica de la fala).

    My intention in this paper is to point out the problems that for some time past they exist on the Extremaduran varieties of Spanish; these problems do not have a clear solution or do not have a unique solution. In the following pages, I will re-examine the general matters (which is the place of the Extremaduran Spanish inside the Spanish diasystem, the linguistic borders and the dialectal words), the phonetic subjects (the sibilant consonants, the aspiration of Latin initial f-, the behavior of word-final vowels in the plural formation) and the linguistic problems of some small towns (the pronunciation of c and z as s in Fuente del Maestre and the historical filiation of the fala).
