  • Resumen
    • The purpose of the present paper is to discuss about the historical growth of cities over different types of ecosystems, and the values and perceptions about nature that this process implies. That is the case of Montevideo city, the capital city in Uruguay. There has been a deep modification of the natural environment and also of the values and perceptions of nature. We studied the suburb system of Montevideo on the Coast of Río de La Plata. This costal area is part of a suburb ecological system, which is characterized by a low biodiversity, instability, and low density of urbanization and population. This system expands over a great extension of land adjacent to big cities. The suburb ecological system of Montevideo extends to east, north and west of the city, in the neighbouring counties of San Jose and Canelones, was developed mainly during the twentieth century
