  • The essay describes, from an eco-historical point of view, the complex relation between town and its river in urban european experience of modern and contemporary times. It examines urban hydraulic network, its pollution and its reclaim during the hard transition of traditional town from "static" hydraulic pattern to a "dynamic" one, as a result of the technical improvements of the industrial revolution. Crisis into the system and the adopted solving are also examined, with London and Paris as paradigms.
