    Reflecting the European trend, the Portuguese romantic drama was essentially marked by the close relation it kept with the past, using, in its plot, a frame of historical trace. In fact, it was varied the type of the relationship maintained by the Portuguese writers of this time with the historical speech. Some included their works in the subtype "historical drama", and others, despite putting their plots in the past, deliberately freed themselves from the minimum conventions required by such categorization. These different positions caused misunderstandings which we try to explain in here.

    Reflectindo a tendência europeia, o drama romântico português foi essencialmente marcado pela relação próxima que manteve com o passado, utilizando, na sua intriga, uma moldura de traço histórico. Na verdade, foi diverso o tipo de relação que os dramaturgos portugueses desta época mantiveram com o discurso histórico, havendo os que inscreviam os seus textos no subgénero "drama histórico", e os que, colocando embora as suas intrigas no passado, libertavam-se assumidamente das convenções mínimas a que uma filiação deste tipo obriga. Estes posicionamentos diferentes geraram equívocos que procuramos aqui explicar.
