As fronteiras da Europa e a negação da viagem: do estreito de Gibraltar ao túnel da Mancha

    This paper discusses forbidden journeys or the literary expression of illegal emigration. The universal right to travel and the «banalisation» of all kinds of trips, now that the world map is scanned by all sorts of flight routes, has its counterpart: forbidden journeys or, in other words, the negation of the right to cross borders. The free movement of people across Schengen Europe has turned the Strait of Gibraltar into a particularly sensitive border and, from a symbolic perspective, a kind of icon of conflicting worlds. An example of this is the collection of short stories about immigration Inmenso Estrecho (Madrid, 2005), which includes stories about the Strait of Gibraltar, but also about other emigration areas. This literary work, as well as others which have been published since shipwrecks of illegal emigrants first made it to the news, confronts us with new maps of culture that have come to challenge European identity. They are engraved with parallel routes which start to leave their mark, particularly in the literary world.

    The literary corpus this paper is based on reflects a change in the journey motive in this era of globalisation. In their absurdity, the crossings narrated in these works express the negation of the journey and reveal the danger of a new rite of passage for the people whose stories are told, in their eternal attempt to reach the Eldorado which, in this instance, is the mirage of Europe.

    Este ensaio discute as viagens proibidas ou a expressão literária da emigração ilegal. O direito universal a viajar e a «banalização» de toda a espécie de viagens, agora que o mapa mundial é atravessado por toda a espécie de rotas aéreas, tem a sua contrapartida: as viagens proibidas ou, por outras palavras, a negação do direito a cruzar fronteiras. A livre deslocação de pessoas na Europa de Schengen transformou o Estreito de Gibraltar numa fronteira particularmente sensível e, numa perspectiva simbólica, numa espécie de ícone de mundos em conflito. Um exemplo disto é um conjunto de contos sobre imigração intitulado Inmenso Estrecho (2005), que inclui histórias sobre o Estreito de Gibraltar, mas também sobre outras áreas de emigração. Este trabalho literário, tal como outros que têm sido publicados desde que os naufrágios de imigrantes ilegais começaram a aparecer nas notícias, confronta-nos com novos mapas de cultura que desafiam a identidade europeia e que estão gravados como rotas paralelas que começaram a deixar a sua marca, particularmente no mundo literário. O corpus literário em que o presente ensaio se baseia reflecte uma mudança no motivo da viagem nesta era de globalização. No seu absurdo, as travessias narradas nestas obras exprimem a negação da viagem e revelam o perigo de um novo rito de passagem para as pessoas cujas histórias são contadas, na sua eterna tentativa para alcançar o Eldorado que, neste caso, é a miragem da Europa.
