O Alfageme de Garrett: a história, o teatro e a nação

    A partir dos estudos sobre a forma e a função do teatro histórico, com especial atenção aos centrados no desenvolvimento deste género em Portugal, nomeadamente no período romântico, realizase uma análise d'O Alfageme de Santarém de Almeida Garrett.

    Salienta-se a particular inserção deste drama - nem sempre reconhecido pela crítica - no seu contexto literário (incluindo a obra dramática do autor), assim como no seu momento político e nacional.

    Desta maneira, numa primeira parte, relaciona-se a obra com o conjunto total da actividade política e pedagógica do autor, tentando salientar os valores de construção nacional que podem descobrir-se ao longo do drama, e que colocam Garrett numa linha de intervenção cultural por parte dos intelectuais românticos que se verifica por toda a Europa. Num segundo momento, realiza-se uma análise d'O Alfageme através dos elementos característicos do drama histórico, destacando os elementos textuais que materializam literariamente essa inserção, tornando o drama num dos mais interessantes exemplos do género no sistema teatral português.

    Based on the studies about the form and function of the historical drama, paying special attention to those which are important for the study of the development of this sort of literature works in Portugal, particularly in Romanticism, we analyse O Alfageme de Santarém, a play written by Almeida Garrett.

    We pay special attention to the literary context of the drama (including the author's works as dramatist) - not always recognized by critical work - as well as its political and national context.

    At first, we connect the drama with the author's political and pedagogical activities. We try to emphasize the author's values in the national recovering (which can be seen in the drama) and that, at the same time, they are the essence for considering Garrett as having an important cultural influence in his country, as well as Romantic intellectuals in all Europe.

    In a second moment we analyse the typical elements of the historical drama emphasizing the textual ones that make this drama one of the most interesting, of its kind, in Portuguese literature.
