Objectives: Renal failure is quite frequent among patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). We evaluated the renal function according to the Cockroft-Gault and MDRD equations, and their agreement for categorizing a person with renal failure. Also, we evaluated a hypothetical relationship between the renal function and the degree of heart failure. Method: We included 101 patients from the Congestive Heart Failure Unit. The renal function was evaluated using the glomerular filtration rate according to Cockroft-Gault and Levey, whose degree of correlation was analyzed. Results: There are no significant differences between both methods. Nor it exists any relationship between glomerular filtration and the degrees of heart failure. Conclusions: The renal function can be calculated in a similar way by both Cockroft-Gault and MDRD for non-outliers. We do not observe any relationship between the degrees of heart and renal failure.
