    Se muestran las diversas significaciones de la aparición milagrosa de una imagen de Cristo en el pueblo de San Guillermo Totolapan (actualmente en el estado de Morelos). En torno a la aparición se organizó la autoridad política y religiosa de esa comunidad indígena, y la orden agustina afianzó su posición en esa doctrina frente a los embates del clero secular. Asimismo se confrontan las distintas versiones acerca de la historia del milagro escritas o recogidas durante la época colonial, y la manera en que criollos e indígenas vincularon el acontecimiento con su propia memoria histórica acerca de Antonio de Roa, figura destacada de la evangelización en Nueva España. Por último se señala el importante papel que hasta el presente continúa teniendo la imagen en la preservación identitaria de la comunidad totolapense y su región.

    This work examines the various meanings of the miraculous appearances of an image of Christ in the town of San Guillermo Totolapan (now the state of Morelos, Mexico). The religious and political authority of the Indian community was organized around these appearances and the Augustine order secured its position in that doctrine against the attacks of the secular clergy. The author also compares the various versions of the history of the �miracle�, written about or heard during colonial times, and the way in which Creoles and Indians linked that event to their own historical memory of Antonio de Roa, a key figure in the evangelization of New Spain. Lastly, the author points out the important role that the image plays today in the preservation of the identity of the town and region.
