Juan Ruíz político: la realeza en el "Libro de buen amor"

    Para comprender la causa del encarcelamiento del autor del Libro de buen amor, quizá convenga pensar no tanto en la vida amorosa del Arcipreste de Hita, de la que no sabemos nada, sino en el importantísimo conflicto -con incidencias dinásticas virtualmente devastadoras- entre María de Portugal, la mujer legítima de Alfonso XI, y Leonor de Guzmán, su concubina oficial, o, si se quiere , en el «loco amor» del rey y en el partido (el de María) -según sugiero- escogido por Juan Ruiz. Ello permitiría comprender que dicho contexto haya dado lugar a una obra que, siendo tan ortodoxa en su sententia como genialmente paradójica en su littera, ni tergiversa los fundamentos sociales y espirituales del «buen amor» ni se muestra favorable a la noción de realeza que encarnaba entonces Alfonso XI de Castilla.

    In order to understand the cause of the imprisonment of the Arcipreste de Hita, author of the Libro de Buen Amor, perhaps it is necessary to leave aside his unacquainted sentimental life and pay more attention to a major conflict with dynastic implications and devastating consequences: the one between María de Portugal, legitimate wife of Alfonso XI, and Leonor de Guzmán, his official mistress. This paper suggests that, in that conflict, Juan Ruiz had taken party for María and not for the «loco amor» of the king. The observation of this context leads us to understand the appearance of a work that, despite being so orthodox in its sententia and so brilliantly paradoxical in its littera, neither distorts the spiritual and social foundations of the «buen amor», nor shows approval for the notion of royalty that Alfonso XI embodied.
