Compitiendo con el champagne: La industria española de los vinos espumosos antes de la Guerra Civil

    La indústria española de los vinos espumosos en las tres últimas décadas ha mostrado una importante capacidad de penetración en el mercado internacional. A su vez los dos grupos empresariales que lideran el sector han emprendido sendos procesos de internacionalización que les han conducido a abrir filiales comercializadoras en los principales mercados e incluso plantas elaboradoras en las más reputadas regiones vitícolas del mundo. Esta trayectoria reciente ha llamado la atención del autor hasta el punto de llevarle a preguntarse por los orígenes y el desarrollo del sector en su etapa infantil. En el artículo se muestra como la consolidación de esta nueva industria en España vino de la mano del aumento de la protección arancelaria que los sucesivos gobiernos de la restauración dispensaron a este tipo de vino. Las dificultades por las que pasó la exportación francesa de vinos espumosos a partir de la Primera Guerra Mundial, junto con el crecimiento de la renta per cápita española durante las décadas de 1910 y 1920 hicieron posible la aceleración del crecimiento del sector que se prolongaría hasta la víspera del inicio de la Guerra Civil española en 1936.

    During the last thirty years the Spanish sparkling wine industry has succeeded to get relevant presence in the international wine market. Thus the two entrepreneurial groups that are the leaders of the industry have opened a large number of commercial branches in the main international markets.

    Furthermore, these groups have built cellars in the most well-known wine-producing regions.

    The successful recent path has moved the author to research about the origins of this sector and its evolution in its childhood age. This article shows the influence of the protectionist policy adopted by the Spanish government in the consolidation of this industry in Spain at the end of XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth. The fall of French champagne exports from the First World War onwards and the rise of the per head income in Spain during the tens and twenties of the XXth made possible an acceleration in the growth of this industry, that stretched till the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
