    En este artículo hemos querido realizar un breve repaso de la historia reciente de la exploración e investigación durante los últimos 100 años y un resumen del estado de conocimiento de la flora canaria a finales del Siglo XX. Con el desarrollo de técnicas modernas de investigación y la incorporación de jóvenes biologos locales en los equipos de investigadores hemos intentado indicar algunos de los campos de estudio mas importantes para la mejora del conocimiento de la flora canaria y para su mejor conservación frente los retos nuevos del Siglo XXI como son la necesidad de un uso sostenible de los recursos naturales y la adaptación al anunciado cambio climático.

    In this paper we present a brief résumé of the recent history of research and exploration through the last 100 years and a summary of the state of knowledge of the flora at the end of the 20th Century. With the development of modern research techniques and the incorporation of young local biologists into the teams of researchers we have attempted to indicate some of the most important fields of study for the improvement of our knowledge of the Canarian flora in the face of the new challenges of the 21st Century such as the necessity to use natural resources sustainably and to adapt to the announced phenomenon of climate change.
