    • This article argues that a social perspective offers interesting possibilities to detect and interpret archaeologically transhumant patterns of pastoral mobility in the past. My contention is that archaeological remains of transhumant pastoral economies are largely determined by socio-economic and socio-political relationships between pastoral groups, and with other (rural) groups such as farmers, large landowners and merchants. Landownership and (inter)national markets for pastoral products are crucial to understand productive strategies and the materially tangible engagement of pastoral groups in rural landscapes.
