  • During the forty years he was in power, Francisco Franco’s portrait appeared on hundreds of stamps in Spain and in the African colonies. That image would change over time. In post- war Spain he is shown strictly in military garb. Later, he was typically shown in civilian attire, all the while enjoying this postal status as if he were the king of Spain and emperor of Africa. No one would challenge him for a place on the postage stamps, which provide us with a fundamental site for analyzing Franco regime propaganda.
