Which phenomenon is holding together the different meanings of one word (Läufer = Sportler, Schachfigur, Teppich)? What is distinguishing them from the meanings of two or more homonyms (Tau = Seil; Tau = Niederschlag)? And how are polysemous words with their different »readings« stored in memory? New approaches in cognitive semantics make it possible to study more precisely polysemy within the scope of a description of the semantic structures of the mental lexicon. This is demonstrated with selected examples, especially with the two verbs ziehen and schieben. On that occasion a new model of description is developed and introduced: the Wortstern.
