When historians consider Franco’s film persona they typically turn to the character portrayed by José Churruca in the film Raza (Race) directed by José Luis Sáenz de Heredia. It is often forgotten, however, that with the celebration of twenty-five years of peace, the Franco regime brought out a documentary film called Franco, ese hombre, also by José Luis Sáenz de Heredia.
The documentary promoted a new image of Franco that was more in tune with the political policies during the period called el Desarrollismo (The years of progress). During that time the myth of peace would become a means for acquiring mass consent of his regime. The film is a valuable document for observing the persona of the dictator promoted in the 70s. The article scrutinizes the difficult transition that the film creates between, on the one hand, the epic discourse of heroic triumph and, on the other, a more humanized image of Franco as a virtuous hero and “nice old man.”
