La guerra civil española estalló en una coyuntura crucial del desarrollo militar, político, pero también mediático de Occidente. España fue noticia para todo el mundo y la cobertura internacional espoleó a su vez el desarrollo de nuevas formas de reportaje y de información, difícilmente discernibles de la propaganda. La tecnología fotográfica, el desarrollo de las revistas ilustradas y el periodismo gráfico, el intercambio de los noticiarios cinematográficos, entre otros factores, conocieron un antes y un después en la contienda española. De ahí que las imágenes de la lucha circularan profusamente a través del globo y asentaran algunos géneros duraderos en la representación de las guerras. Todavía hoy la herencia de la guerra civil española constituye un arsenal iconográfico fundamental y es sentido como un origen en la migración constante de imágenes, desde la fotografía hasta el cine, pasando por la cartelística, las revistas o la prensa

The Spanish Civil War broke out within a complex of political factors, military progress and the mass media. Spain was highlighted in the news worldwide, and international coverage of the war spurred on new forms of reporting, often indistinguishable from propaganda.
Advances in photography, illustration-filled magazines and newspapers, and the use of cinemas for disseminating information would mark a new era for journalism. It was in this context that images of the war were circulated around the globe and played a part in establishing what would eventually become permanent genres in war journalism. These artefacts from the Spanish Civil War constitute a rich and fundamental source of cultural iconography, and can be seen as the first example of worldwide circulation of images in photographs, posters, magazines, newspapers and cinema.
