Unqualified ‘biology’ in a book title is ambitious. Marine Mammal Biology reflects the immense expertise of the 25 authors of the 14 chapters in subjects ranging from molecular systematics to cognitive psychology. The book is well integrated, not only by the ‘evolutionary approach’, but also because marine mammalogists often move among disciplines, and hence are given to lateral thinking. For the nonspecialist, there are appropriate boxes about current concepts, methodologies and terminology.
