This paper is a reflection on social and political commitment in the production of documentaries in North America in the 305. Under the influence of filmmakers such as Dziga Vertov and the group of British documentary-makers led by John Grierson, The Worker's Film and Photo League, Nykino and Frontier Film Group brought together left-wing photographers and film-makers in the U.S. Their productions showed their commitment to progressive ideas by means of film and photographic documents which denounced the most important conflicts of that period: the Spanish Civil War, the conflict between China and Japan, the social consequences of the Depression, the struggle to find work, the fights of the trade unions, the fights for civil rights. The work of these groups was based on the idea that a documentary recorded an event, reality, but, above all, brought to it a point of view, recorded an opinion and took sides. This study also deals with how the new technologies of the period affected the work of audio-visual production.
