  The harsh conditions of the Mediterranean coast contrast with those of the Nile valley. The coast is also an area of strategic importance, a frontier with Israel. These factors have justified the substantial development of irrigation in the area around the Suez canal. Further east, the harnessing of water resources, initiated by the Israelis, has given rise to an original form of agricultural development. The future of the region is conditioned as much by its water resources as by the problematic international litigation over the Nile's waters.

  Le littoral méditerranéen du Sinaï contraste par la rigueur de ses conditions naturelles avec la vallée du Nil. Mais c'est aussi un espace stratégique, un front pionnier face à Israël. Ces données justifient un effort d'équipement hydraulique considérable aux abords du canal de Suez. Plus à l'Est, l'exploitation des nappes phréatiques, initiée par les Israéliens, donne lieu à un développement agricole original. L'avenir de la région n'en est pas moins conditionné par une dotation en eau que le litige international sur les eaux du Nil rend problématique.
