    "Political parties have been major players in the democratic transitions in Latin America. However, in most countries during the past decade they have experienced a major crisis, against the backdrop of a degradation in democratic institutions. Some have been unable to change their practices, and have sometimes disappeared, swept away by the success of charismatic and anti-party outsiders. Others have allowed competiting structures to emerge. All have tended to abandon their ideological stance and to transform themselves into simple electoral machines, serving candidates who increasingly resort to a populist discourse, on the heels of those who put an end to "partitocracy."

    Les partis politiques ont été des acteurs majeurs des transitions démocratiques en Amérique latine. Au cours de la décennie passée, ils sont, dans la plupart des pays, entrés dans une crise profonde, sur fond de dégradation des institutions démocratiques. Certains n’ont pas su changer leurs pratiques et ont parfois complètement disparu, balayés par le succès d’outsiders charismatiques et antipartis. D’autres ont laissé naître à leur côté des formations concurrentes. Tous ont eu tendance à se « désidéologiser » et à se transformer en de simples machines électorales, au service de candidats qui recourent de plus en plus au discours populiste, à l’instar de ceux qui ont mis fin à la partitocratie.
