Laicidad y laicismos en España: ¿Qué España Laica?

En este artículo se distinguen dos tipos de laicismo: uno inclusivo, que respeta y valora positivamente la religión, y quiere preservar un amplio espacio público para ella; y otro excluyente, que es más hostil a la religión y trata de expulsarla dela plaza pública para confinarla en el ámbito de la vida íntima. En la primera parte del artículo se analizan los acontecimientos históricos y los cambios institucionales que han propiciado el renacimiento del laicismo excluyente en las sociedades occidentales. Yen la segunda parte se rastrea la reemergencia de un laicismo excluyente y especialmente beligerante con la religión católica en España, y se plantea la cuestión de hacia qué tipo de laicismo se encamina nuestro país.

This article distinguishes two types of secularisms in contemporary Western societies: one inclusive and other exclusionary Inclusive secularism respects and values religion positively, and wants its voice to be heard in the public square. Exclusionary secularism is hostile to religion, tends to view it as superstition and a worthless pursuit, and wants religion to be expelled from the public square, to rest confined within the bounds of the private sphere. The first part of the article contains a reflection on both the historical events and the institutional transformations that have led to the resurgence of exclusionary secularism in contemporary western societies. In the second part. the reflection shifts to Spain, tracing the late development of a movement of exclusionary secularism in this country, and speculating on the kind of secularism that might prevail in it.
