Resumen de �We Be Killin� Them�: Hierarchies of Black Masculinity in Urban Basketball Spaces
This article examines a local park basketball culture and shows how discursive practices constituted masculine hierarchies and proliferated black masculinities. Through pickup basketball, several young black men took up various positions of power and were able to determine access to neighborhood parks and dictate the codes of behavior. Drawing on poststructural and social geography theories, we argue that male power became authorized through the community�s privileging of basketball and led to the hierarchical distribution of black masculinities within park spaces. The young black men psychically and materially invested in black masculinities, which were aligned with the logics of �heroic� and responsible citizenship; these notions had prominence because of the strong (re)production of the �Sport vs. Gangs� discourse (Cole, 1996) in their neighborhoods. Rather than providing an essentialist reading of these young men as positioned by this neo-liberal discourse, however, we also pay attention to the possibilities that the young men used basketball to invest in diverse life pathways involving alternative versions of the self.
Cet article porte sur la culture du ballon-panier dans des parcs locaux et sur la façon dont les pratiques discursives constituent les hiérarchies masculines et les masculinités noires. Par le biais du ballon-panier, plusieurs jeunes hommes noirs ont adopté des positions de pouvoir et ont pu déterminer l�accès aux parcs locaux ainsi que dicter les codes comportementaux. Empruntant aux théories poststructuraliste et de la géographie sociale, nous suggérons que le pouvoir masculin a été sanctionné par la communauté qui privilégie le ballon-panier et a mené à la distribution hiérarchique des masculinités noires au sein des parcs. Autant psychiquement que matériellement, les jeunes hommes noirs se sont investis dans des masculinités noires alignées sur la logique des citoyennetés responsables et « héroïques » ; logique émergeant de la reproduction des discours de « sport plutôt que gangs » présents dans leur voisinage (Cole, 1996). Plutôt que de donner une lecture essentialiste de ces jeunes hommes comme le fait un tel discours néolibéral, nous nous intéressons plutôt à la possibilité que ces jeunes hommes utilisent le ballon-panier pour s�engager dans des sentiers de vie impliquant des versions alternatives du moi.
