Two topics are examined in this paper: linguistic divergence and linguistic distance between languages. The author discuses the difficulties which arise when trying to find means for quantifying linguistic divergence and linguistic distance -to be able to do so on the basis of integrated computer-based systems, linguistic data must be first converted into numeric data-, and the type of codification needed in order to avoid losses of information when converting linguistic data into numeric data.
