Resumen de Seguridad e identidad en Carabanchel: los significados de un barrio como herramienta para el Trabajo Social

En el siguiente artículo pretendo dar cuenta de la relación existente entre los significados de un barrio, las identificaciones con ese espacio, las representaciones de la «inseguridad ciudadana» y el ejercicio del trabajo social. Basándome en el material recopilado en un trabajo de campo realizado en el madrileño distrito de Carabanchel, trato de mostrar los significados devaluados que históricamente ha arrastrado el barrio como consecuencia de la relativa exclusión material que ha sufrido y de las representaciones negativas efectuadas por agencias externas (como los medios de comunicación). A su vez, intento recopilar algunas de las resignificaciones efectuadas por los habitantes de Carabanchel de manera activa, que corroboran o contradicen esos significados atribuidos desde el exterior. A lo largo del texto, se vincula esta semántica barrial con los discursos y las prácticas que se basan en la inseguridad, pretendiendo reflejar cómo las distintas posiciones sociales ante la peligrosidad parecen varíar en función del momento dentro de la trayectoria biográfica de poder social.

This article seeks to show the link between meanings coming from a neighbourhood, people�s identification with this place, representations of «lack of safety in the streets» and the exercise of social work. Based on the results of research compiled in the Carabanchel neighbourhood of Madrid, the aim is to show the devalued meanings that the neighbourhood has historically carried with itself as a consequence of the relative material exclusion it has suffered and the negative representations built around it by external agents (such as the media). At the same time, the article compiles some of the reinterpretations actively made by people living in Carabanchel, which corroborate or contradict those meanings imposed from outside. Throughout the text, these neighbourhood meanings are connected with discourses and practices based on insecurity, trying to show how different social positions vis-à-vis danger change depending upon the moment within the biographical course of social power.
