Understanding why students make university choices has been the subject of investigation by researchers worldwide. From a study of first year students entering Ryerson University's Hospitality and Tourism program in 2007, research showed that school reputation, faculty teaching and assistance, the degree's business focus and career/industry opportunities were the main draw for new students. Opposing other studies of this nature, friends and family and campus atmosphere did not influence program choice and students choose to study hospitality and tourism as their first choice rather than a default or second choice program.
