  Este ensayo sobre el canto XXIX del Purgatorio busca focalizar el aspecto erótico del encuentro edénico de Dante con Matelda: se intentará subrayar no sólo la evidencia, sino también la dificultad hermenéutica producida por la reevocación inquietante del fantasma de Guido Cavalcanti en el retrato de Matelda. Esta última sustituye en el Edén a Virgilio, que pronto desaparecerá del poema. Estamos ante otro nudo crucial de toda la Commedia: Dante encuentra la propia imagen reflejada en las aguas del río, aspecto que, aunque en el XXIX ocupa sólo un terceto, introduce un elemento importante: el espejo de las aguas es el instrumento a través del cual el protagonista vive y ve su completa iniciación, y se hace consciente de la posibilidad de emprender su nueva y altísima quête

  This essay on Canto XXIX of the Purgatorio aims to focus the erotic aspect of Dante�s meeting with Matelda in Eden: I will try to emphasize not just the evidence, but also the hermeneutic difficulty which the unsettling re-evocation of Guido Cavalcanti�s ghost in the depiction of Matelda raises.

  Matelda takes Virgil�s place in Eden, a Virgil soon to disappear from the poem. This is another crucial juncture for all the Commedia: Dante sees his own image reflected in the waters of the river, an aspect which, though only given one tercet in Canto XXIX, introduces an important element: the mirror of the waters is the instrument through which the protagonist lives and sees his complete initiation, becoming conscious of the possibility of embarking on his new and supreme quest.
