    Antiliberalism is deep-seated in French political culture, both on the Right and on the Left. While economic policy has diverged from the principles proclaimed, moving from national planning to a shamefaced acceptance of marketisation and privatisation, those on the Left who wished to move towards a liberalised socialism have been unable to carry the Socialist party with them. On the Right, half-hearted attempts at reform of the French social model have been succeeded by a shock therapy that has rapidly run into resistance and disorderly tactical retreat. Piecemeal state intervention, motivated by economic patriotism, persists.

    L’antilibéralisme est profondément enraciné dans la culture politique française, à droite comme à gauche. Alors que la politique économique s’est éloignée des principes affichés, passant de la planification nationale à une acceptation honteuse du marché et de la privatisation, les partisans à gauche d’un socialisme libéralisé ont été incapables de convaincre le Parti socialiste. À droite, des tentatives peu convaincues de réformer le modèle social français ont été suivies par une thérapie de choc qui s’est rapidement heurtée à une résistance entraînant une retraite tactique désordonnée. Une politique au coup par coup d’intervention de l’État, motivée par le patriotisme économique, persiste.
