    From the beginning, the relationships between the Fifth Republic and political parties have been characterized by a deep ambivalence: the new regime was built by General de Gaulle to get rid of the parties and reduce them to a secondary role. However, the adaptation of the parties to the presidential system — and the choice of this system in periods of cohabitation — has led to a consolidation of the regime and of its Gaullist understanding at the expense of a close interweaving between parties and the higher reaches of government.

    Les rapports entre la Ve République et les partis politiques sont depuis l’origine marqués par une profonde ambiguïté : le nouveau régime est bâti par le général de Gaulle pour chasser les partis des institutions et les réduire à un rôle secondaire, mais l’adaptation des partis au système présidentiel – et le choix de celui-ci durant les phases de cohabitation – a permis de consolider le régime et de le maintenir dans sa lecture gaullienne, au prix d’une imbrication étroite entre partis et sommets de l’État.
