The author talks about the idea of the Texas president Mirabeau B. Lamar about converting Texas in a strong and independent republic, reason why in 1841 he sent an expedition to Santa Fe, New Mexico, with the purpose of integrating this territory to the Republic of Texas, which failed. The article shows the annexation intention was justified by commercial interests and based on the mistaken border limits which finally were attached to the expansion project that would develop after its annexation to the United States.
