Silvestre Villegas indaga los antecedentes de la invasión francesa y, para ello, estudia las relaciones internacionales de México durante la Guerra de Reforma; particularmente, la actuación de Manuel Doblado, ministro juarista, y Juan Prim, jefe del ejército español. El autor concluye que, de no haber sido por la inteligencia en la negociación de estos dos liberales, la invasión tripartita por parte de Francia, España e Inglaterra, se habría consumado en su totalidad.

Silvestre Villegas investigates the precedents of the French Intervention, and for this reason studies the international relations of Mexico during the Reform War, especially the performance of Manuel Doblado, a minister from the Juárez government, and Juan Prim, chief of the Spanish Army. The author concludes that if it was not for the negotiations of these two liberal persons, the tripartite invasion by France, Spain and England, would definitely have taken place.
