Beatriz Urías Horcasitas expone el surgimiento de la conciencia regional en el México independiente. Analiza el pensamiento decimonónico en Yucatán y afirma que, tras la Colonia, la consolidación del Estado-nación se caracterizó por los problemas para conciliar los principios democráticos con la estructura de clases. La autora cree que la lucha de los separatistas yucatecos contra el poder central pudo estar vinculada con la Guerra de Castas, pues dicha rebelión incluyó a los indígenas en un discurso de igualdad mientras éstos eran marginados por la clase dominante.

Beatriz Urías Horcasitas explains the appearance of the regional conscience in the Independent Mexico. Analyzes the nineteenth century thinking in Yucatán and confirms that after the Colonial period, the consolidation of the State and the Nation was characterized by problems to conceal the democratic principles with the structure of classes. The author believes that the fight of the separatists from Yucatán against the central government could have been linked to the guerra de Castas (war of Castes), because this rebellion included the indigenous as equals while they were oppressed by the dominating class.
