Based upon the past work of exploration and collection of the genepool of okra and its wild relatives by NBPGR Regional Station, Thrissur, India, and on literature on taxonomy of the genus at the national and international levels, there exists 8 species in India. Of these, six occur in the southern region of the country, including two cultivated species of Asian and African origin. Of 2807 sites surveyed for various crops, only six sites in the southern region produced A. moschatus subsp. tuberosus, which had a 0.214 frequency of distribution. These sites had very meagre populations. A note on the taxonomy of the genus along with detailed account of the vulnerability of A. moschatus subsp. tuberosus and the ecological reasons for its rarity are discussed.
